If you plan to attend college for the first time in 2011 or have a family member who will, you’re about to embark on student financial aid season.

If you’re looking for money for college and want to apply for financial assistance, your first stop should be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA. All federal student loans, federal grants, and other forms of federal student aid are tied to this form.

Federal Student Aid

The FAFSA can be filled out and submitted online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is available free of charge, and submission is also free. The federal deadline for submitting your FAFSA is June 30.

You don’t need to know which college or university you plan to attend in order to fill out or submit the form, but you will need to refer to your 2010 tax return. If you’re a dependent of your parents, you’ll need to have the 2010 tax return of your custodial parent(s) or the parent who claims you as a deduction, even if this parent doesn’t plan to help you pay for college.

Once you submit your FAFSA, the Department of Education will generate a Student Aid Report (SAR) that summarizes your and your parents’ financial information. You can choose which schools receive your SAR, and you can add schools to this list at any time.

The schools that receive your SAR will analyze your financial information and generate a financial aid package based largely on the school’s cost of attendance and the determination of your ability to pay. (Some schools also offer non-need-based financial aid, which is awarded on the basis of merit rather than on your financial need.)

Federal grant assistance is reserved for low-income and financial needy students. Most students, however, will qualify for federal college loans.

Federal Stafford student loans are available in both need-based and non-need-based versions. Need-based subsidized Stafford loans are reserved for students who demonstrate financial need. Non-need-based unsubsidized Stafford loans are available regardless of financial need. There’s no credit check or co-signer required for Stafford student loans; you take out these loans in your own name.

State Financial Aid

Some states also use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state student loan and grant assistance programs. Although the federal deadline for submitting the FAFSA is June 30, many states have earlier filing deadlines, with some falling as early as Feb. 15, 2011.

Other states have no specific application deadlines but award state-funded student aid on a first-come, first-served basis, processing college aid applications only as long as there are still state funds available to distribute.

Parent Loans

The federal government also offers parent loans, known as PLUS loans, for parents who want to help their undergraduate student pay for college.

Although the Education Department doesn’t require you to have filled out a FAFSA in order for your parents to apply for a PLUS loan, many schools will require it. Such a school will not approve or certify an application for a PLUS parent loan until a completed FAFSA form is on file for the student.

As with federal student loans, repayment on federal PLUS loans can be deferred until you, the student, graduate or leave school.

The 1–2–3 of Getting Financial Aid for College

1) Complete Your FAFSA — Carefully

Filling out the FAFSA can be time-consuming, and it requires you to have a good deal of documentation on hand.

Since you’ll be submitting your FAFSA to the federal government, just like a tax return, it’s highly inadvisable to misstate or misrepresent your financial information on the FAFSA in any way. Irregularities in a FAFSA form are flagged and must be corrected before the form can be processed, delaying your financial aid application.

If you’re awarded grants, student loans, or other financial aid based on false or incorrect information that you submitted on the FAFSA, you may be required to repay any over-allocation of financial aid immediately. If the misstatements are determined to be deliberate or egregious, you may be subject to fines and other sanctions.

2) Search for Scholarships

While your FAFSA is being processed, begin hunting for scholarships. Scholarships are available for virtually all types of students in almost every field of study. Some scholarships are need-based, others are merit-based, and some are a combination of both.

Since scholarships provide you with award money that doesn’t need to be repaid, like a student loan, you can think of scholarships as “free money” for college.

Use an online scholarship search engine that keeps an updated database of scholarships and lets you search that database for free. The best online scholarship search sites routinely list millions of scholarship listings with billions of dollars of award money available.

3) Only Use Private Student Loans as a Last Resort

Once you receive your school financial aid package, make sure to take advantage of all your federal and state student aid options before you turn to higher-cost financial options.

Specifically, you should maximize your federal student loans before turning to the non-federal private student loans offered by banks and other for-profit private lenders.

Federal college loans offer fixed interest rates that are generally lower than the variable interest rates offered by private student loans. Federal loans also offer more flexible repayment options than the typical private student loan program. You should only turn to a private college loan when all your other federal and state student loan options have been exhausted.

Students are said to be the backbone of the nation. It is, therefore, duty of the state to take care of the students and to ensure that they can receive adequate education during the budding period of their life. It is another thing that United Kingdom may not appear to have confidence in these good and bright words. The British government has taken some steps in the recent years which have made edification more expensive than ever. Tuition fees in the educational centers have been raised much to the disadvantages of the students. Despite what the students are experiencing now-a-days, loans for students are there for the benefit of the students who want to go ahead with their studies.

Loans for students, according to the norms of the financing market, are classified in two forms: secured and unsecured. Loans for students in secured form are available if the students can provide valuable property as guarantee against which the lender grants the loan amount. The lenders have the right to take possession of the said property if the students cannot repay the loan amount within the scheduled period.

Usually, students go for the students loans in unsecured form in which case the rates of interest are higher. The lenders prefer advancing loans to the parents of the students, because they want to ensure the reimbursement of the loan amount. This kind of loans is called parents student loans.

The financial institutions and financial agencies have several schemes on loans for students. Students can avail loans to complete their studies securing this kind of loans. It is to be noted that terms and conditions set by the financial institutions and such other non-government lending agencies are not favorable for the students. The rates of interest are considerably high.

Loans for students in United Kingdom are available at better terms and condition from the government. The students can apply in the prescribed form available in the Office of the Directorate of Education. The students are to submit personal details and they are to get the form forwarded by the chief of the educational center (institute/college/ university etc). Of course, students of the universities, especially the brilliant students, are awarded good amount of loans at favorable terms and at affordable rates of interest.

As the cost of college education continues to rise, many students and parents turn to college student loans to defer the cost. Covering the cost of dorms, books, food, transportation, tuition and other expenses is often times a difficult challenge for students to overcome.

As students take on financial aid in the form of college student loans, it’s not uncommon for a single student to have multiple loans as they move closer to graduation. Loans become due after a six to nine month grace period which begins at graduation.

Private school loan consolidation can be a solution that reduces the financial load of managing multiple student loans as they come due. Private school loan consolidation is the process of combining multiple private student loans (as opposed to federal student loans) into a single consolidated loan.

The main goal of obtaining a private school loan consolidation is to lower monthly payments, reduce the interest rate and extend the terms of re-payment. Re-payment terms range from ten to thirty years. A fixed interest rate can also be obtained which is beneficial. If a student has all federal loans, they should not use private school loan consolidation as it would result is a loss of the benefits that come with federal loans.

If a student has borrowed more than 00 in private loans or if the existing student loan debt is greater than 8% of the student’s income, they should look into consolidation.

Factors to be considered before making a final decision on student loan consolidation include:- Lenders – Interest rates- Total loan payments- Credit history- Payments remaining on original loans

For some students, the ease of managing a single payment is the outstanding benefit of private school loan consolidation. While it is true that loan consolidation will reduce monthly payments, it will also lengthen the terms of re-payment, thereby increasing the overall amount of interest paid over the life of the loan.

The student must decide which works best for him/her – lower payments over a longer period of time or getting out of debt earlier by paying off the initial loans on time.

It is a common perception among the students that the international studies have a global appeal. Very rightly, the students who are going out for the international colleges have been able to get the required exposure to the foreign universities. They have attained the degrees and certificate courses with exposure to the variety of students from different communities.

International universities across the globe have become the hot spots for students who want to pursue higher studies in different subjects. There are many students who wouldn’t be able to pay for the higher education, but are qualified to be selected by many colleges. For them, the financial solutions are found in the top universities in Turkey, Mexico and Argentina, where the cost of studies are not very high and are completely within the range of affordability of these students.

For an average student who has made it through the tests to qualify for the top universities in the developed countries, the cost of study would be a sure hindrance. This cost factor includes the tuition fees as well as other expenses including the food and accommodation. This is something that helps a lot when the students go for the countries like Turkey, where the cost of living is less is comparison to the developed countries like USA and UK.

Moreover, the tuition fees of the top universities in Turkey are less than what is charged in the more developed countries. Due to these reasons, the students are turning towards the top universities in Turkey to pursue their higher education. Lower costs don’t mean that the standards of education are lower than any other colleges in the world. In contrast, these top universities in Turkey and other places have the best educations system and therefore, they are being preferred by the students from different countries.

Those who are interested for the international colleges can also take admissions in these institutes and go for a better future in many international companies. Top universities in Mexico have been well known and students are turning up to join these universities in various courses, thereby having quality education at lower costs. The cost of living in Mexico is quite low, due to which the students do not feel the pinch of studying in a foreign land. And, added to it is the better standard of education.

In the case of Argentina also, the students find a lower cost of living and lower tuition fees so that they can easily arrange for studying in the top universities in Argentina. The colleges in Argentina are well known for their higher education degrees and have established themselves among the best in the world. With students coming to these top universities in Argentina from various places around the globe, it is becoming a place filled with students, who are finding the studies to be quite affordable, in comparison to the other parts of the world. With such affordability and the high quality of education, especially the higher studies, it is obvious that the students from different countries would be interested for the higher courses.
